Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johannson

Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johannson Break Up

I wondered if this might happen…

After M. Ward teamed up with Zooey Deschanel for She & Him, I thought it might be the start of a trend…

Fringe rockers joining forces with mysterious hollywood starlets, working some production magic and gimmicking their way into some extra record sales…

of course that wasn’t the case with She & Him… that record is really great… one of the best of 2008.

But when I saw Pete Yorn with Scarlett Johannson next to his name, I feared the gimmick…

Their collaboration Break Up released today and I’m breathing a sigh of relief (and listening through it a second time in a row)… maybe there is some marketing at work (you can’t blame him for adding “Scarlett Johannson” to his Google keywords), but who cares… she’s got a good voice and adds a really nice element to Pete’s classic sound.

The aptly named album is really about conflict (inner and outer)… about the way relationships sometimes go when two people are as close as they can be…

How breakups sometimes come when things seem great…

How you can’t stand someone til you’re apart…

This isn’t a record that takes your breath away at first listen, but it is one that you can hear quite a few times without growing weary.

I’m happy to see Pete Yorn back in good form and I’m now on my third listen…
